Building Bridges

Changing the Future of Natural Gas

Over a career in energy, telecom and other regulated industries spanning nearly three decades, as an attorney, corporate officer and now a strategic advisor, Jim Kibler has worked to help organizations navigate disruption and capture opportunity,

  • As a founding director of Our Nation's Energy Future, www.onefuture.us, Jim worked with others in the natural gas value chain to develop a science-driven, performance-based approach to methane emissions that was approved by the Obama Administration as part of its Methane Challenge.
  • Jim led a coalition of natural gas utilities, consumer advocates, and environmental NGOs to reshape regulatory policies in Virginia to better align with both customer and environmental goals, driving emissions reductions and creating better outcomes for customers and the utilities. These wins became the models for other states. https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title56/chapter26/ https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title56/chapter25/
  • Jim proposed, recruited other companies, and led the private sector aspect of this work with The Nature Conservancy to reimagine the way natural gas pipelines should be constructed in the Appalachian Mountains.  https://www.nature.org/en-us/about-us/where-we-work/united-states/virginia/stories-in-virginia/va-how-we-work-rivers-and-bays/

Building Communities

The Social Capital "Thing"

We look to collaborate with thought leaders and visionaries, as Jim has done with organizations like Pharrell  Williams' Something in The Water https://somethinginthewater.com/home, a true reinvention for our #757 region that focuses on our unparalleled diversity and the commonality of this beautiful place we call home. Jim's work with the 757 Recovery and Resilience initiative https://www.757recovery.com/ has provided deep insight into what is foremost on the minds of young workers as they consider where they want to live, versus where they want to work.  And we'll work with others to find ways to capture the essence of place-making and find constructive steps to solve for the challenges our shared future holds.

Building Futures

Re-understanding Stakeholders

Everyone wants a better, brighter future.  Our work to date demonstrates that the best method to achieve better futures is through a holistic approach like Project GO, a US Chamber initiative that broadens corporate accountability beyond just shareholders to other stakeholders, including employees, communities served, and interested NGOs.  This is the exact model employed by leading utilities like the one I've led - a deeper understanding of the business's reach into the community yields tremendous insight into the ways that investment and engagement will build long-term value and create an ecosystem that permeates the community and creates better quality of life for those the business serves as an engaged, responsible partner.

Feedback

"Jim’s superpower is his ability to identify and bring together influencers with disparate interests and to find common ground to develop innovative solutions.  His collaborative leadership style produces effective, timely results."

- Sarah Huddle, APR, President & Founder, Albright Group Strategic Communications; National Co-Chair, Public Relations Society of America.

"Jim’s breadth of experience, emotional intelligence and practical approach to problem solving allows him to get things done, when others would have failed.”

- Mark Boling, Founder and CEO, 2C NRG LLC; co-founder, ONE Future; former EVP of Southwestern Energy Company, the fifth largest natural gas provider in the United States

"Jim Kibler, with his new company, Next Paradigm Advisors, is precisely the thought leader the industry needs to help traditional energy firms build new brands in ways than transcend politics, while creating a much stronger nexus between these important companies and the many stakeholders who have a vested interest in the future of clean, reliable, and low cost energy."

- Wayne Turnage, Deputy Mayor, District of Columbia; former Chief of Staff to Governor Tim Kaine (VA).

“Respected across both sides of the aisle for his insight and willingness to get into the weeds, Jim brings the “it” factor to the most intractable issues and finds a way to get it done.”

- Rhod Shaw, Principal, The Alpine Group
